Özlem Ünsal is an İstanbul researcher currently continuing her Ph.D. studies at the City University of London, Department of Sociology. The state-led urban transformation of İstanbul; (re)positioning of inner-city poverty areas within this process; urban oppositional movements triggered under the given circumstances; and neighborhood movements, in particular, constitute some of her main research interests. Beyoğlu, within this landscape, not only represents a physical focal point, but also a socio-economic one, and signifies a key urban plane.
