How did Hortus Botanicus Istanbulensis, İstanbul's first botanical garden, begin?

Taxonomist Erdal Üzen is a faculty member of the Botany Department of İstanbul University. He is responsible for the Alfred Heilbronn Botanical Garden, the first botanical garden in Turkey. Üzen’s research around the flora of Turkey has taken him across the country. He is currently working to prevent the extinction of some of İstanbul’s plant species and is studying the most important of Turkey’s geophytes: gladioli and tulips.
