Workshop: Who am I?

SALT Interpretation invites high school students to participate in a series of workshops entitled “Who am I?” organized in the scope of the 1+8 exhibition. During the workshops, which will be led by artists Endam Acar and Gözde Türkkan, students will discuss questions related to identity, borders and stereotypes.

While the artists will be utilizing different techniques, each workshop aims to construct a discursive environment for high school groups through the examination of perceptions that relate to political, social and personal issues. The workshop program, starting with the exhibition tour led by the SALT Interpretation team, seeks to delve into questions such as what identity is, which social factors contribute to identity formation, who “the other” is, and how prejudiced we are.

At the end of the workshop, students will be encouraged to create their own photography, collage and video projects. All projects will be exhibited on Pinterest.

The workshops will be held in Turkish and are open to all high school students.
Free shuttle service will be provided for public schools.

Endam Acar
Endam Acar graduated from Dicle University, Faculty of Fine Arts in 2004. With a focus on video, painting and photography, the artist works with at-risk children, youth and women. He explores issues of identity, militarism, nationalism, migration and human rights in his works. Acar lives in İstanbul and is involved with numerous social observance, human rights, rehabilitation and self-improvement projects as coordinator.

Gözde Türkkan (mimiko)
Gözde Türkkan’s alias mimiko’s photography works focus on gender politics, identities and roles through a subjective documentary approach. After graduating from İstanbul Bilgi University, Faculty of Communications, Department of Photography and Video, Türkkan worked as a photography course instructor in the university’s Visual Communication Design Department. She received her M.A. from the University of the Arts London, Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design (London, UK) in 2010. Her works have been exhibited in London, Paris, Hong Kong and Vienna and solo shows of her work Full Contact (2012) and Looking Back at You were (2011) organized in İstanbul.
