Silence of the Tides (2021)
Director: Pieter-Rim de Kroon
103 minutes
English; Turkish subtitles
Silence of the Tides focuses on the Wadden Sea, one of the world's largest uninterrupted intertidal zones, spanning the coasts of the Netherlands, Germany, and Denmark. The film relies on observation to reveal the cyclical relationship between humans and nature, mirroring the rhythm of the tides. Through changing seasons and contrasting forces—life and death, storm and calm—it explores how people connect with this dynamic ecosystem.
In this documentary, director Pieter-Rim de Kroon often leaves the camera fixed for long stretches, capturing the region as a living organism where sky, water, wind, and light are in constant flux. Shots from different times of day merge into each other almost imperceptibly, transforming a dry seabed into a rippling expanse of water.
