Leviathan (2012)
Directors: Lucien Castaing-Taylor, Véréna Paravel
87 minutes
English; Turkish subtitles
Leviathan takes viewers into the harsh and chaotic reality of the fishing industry in North America. Filmed off the coast of New Bedford, Massachusetts—once famed as the world's whaling capital and the setting for Herman Melville's
Moby-Dick—the documentary captures the grueling labor aboard a groundfish trawler. Using a dozen small, body-mounted cameras, it unveils the relentless struggle between humans, machines, and nature as the fishermen move from the deck to the depths of the ocean.
Pushing the boundaries of documentary filmmaking and traditional narrative forms, Leviathan offers an immersive experience through raw, unfiltered footage. The film won the FIPRESCI Prize at the 65th Locarno Film Festival, where it premiered.
