The History of Archaeology from
the Ottoman Empire to the Republic

Conceived in the context of the Scramble for the Past: A Story of Archaeology in the Ottoman Empire, 1753-1914 exhibition, the conference aims to reach beyond the exhibition and its publication’s time frame to include the Republican Era. Local and international experts from diverse disciplines will not only explore the problematic of restoration and the place of archaeology in visual and popular culture, but will also revisit and discuss the politics of archaeology by bringing to the fore issues like the sharing of archaeological objects, national identity, ownership and historiography. Scramble for the Past is open at SALT Galata until March 11.
