SALT Galata, Auditorium
During the years 1974-1980, when İsmail Saray worked as an arts and crafts teacher at Samsun Education Institute, he was active in rethinking arts education in Turkey. Saray and fellow artists developed a cooperative project where students also taught what they knew to each other as a way of learning by skill sharing. Two years after moving to London in 1980, he founded the AND Association with his wife and life-long collaborator Jenni Boswell-Jones and artist Roderick Coyne. The magazine
AND Journal of Art & Art Education which they published between 1984 and 1993 attempted to offer a shared alternative platform for both artists and educators.
The panel on arts education at SALT Galata will be moderated by artist, writer and educator Felicity Allen and includes artist İnci Eviner and curator Antony Hudek. Eviner will present the performative research
Co-action Device: A Study from the 13th Istanbul Biennial, and Hudek will focus on the artist John Latham and the Artist Placement Group, as well as artists' and non-profit institutions' approaches to arts education.
The panel will be held in English with simultaneous translation to Turkish.
The exhibition
From England with Love, İsmail Saray is on view at SALT Galata until November 2.
