Artist and architect Ameneh Solati will present her work on the Iraqi marshes, based on her essay "Wetlands of Resistance" (e-flux Architecture, 2023).

The wetlands in southern Iraq challenge dominant understandings of nature—either as terra nullius used to justify exploitation or as neutral zones defined by cultural and ecological richness and biodiversity. In her talk, Solati instead discusses the marshes as a political arena where traces of desiccation, displacement, return, and resistance are inscribed onto the terrain.

This talk is organized as part of "Wetlands as Pedagogical Spaces," one of five research strands within Water Assemblies, which explores wetlands through a variety of media and disciplines in an urgent call to rethink these resilient landscapes critical to the climate crisis. The talk will be held in English and is open to everyone. The program will take place online via Zoom. Click here to register.
