Çıplak Vatandaş [The Naked Citizen] (1985)
Director: Başar Sabuncu
82 minutes
Turkish; English subtitles
The first film of late director Başar Sabuncu,
Çıplak Vatandaş [The Naked Citizen] (1985) sets itself apart from films of a similar nature because of its elements that estrange the audience. With the wife of the character pregnant with their fifth child, the film depicts the life of a low-income white-collar worker who, unable to cope with his overwhelming distress, throws himself stark naked onto the streets where he soon becomes a media hero.
Detailing new journalistic approaches, the boom in advertising, and Prime Minister Turgut Özal's prime-time TV programs titled
İcraatin İçinden [Inside the Activity], the film sketches an impressive panorama of Turkey in the 1980s.
Organized in parallel to the exhibition
